On April 20, 2025, the 23rd day of the third month of the lunar calendar, is the birthday of Mazu. To commemorate the 1065th birthday of Mazu, Meizhou Island was bustling last night and this morning, with thousands of Mazu worshippers from home and abroad gathering here for the “Night Vigil to Celebrate Mazu’s Birthday” grand ceremony.
The Mazu faith has a long history. Since the Song Dynasty, Mazu has become one of the most important folk beliefs in China, with its influence extending to Southeast Asia and overseas Chinese communities. Meizhou Island, as the hometown of Mazu, holds grand commemorative events every year, and this year’s celebration is particularly special. Not only because of its long history, but also because representatives of Mazu culture from all over the world gather together to pray for world peace and prosperity.
The celebration began on the evening of April 19, with a stunning light show at the ancestral temple on Meizhou Island. The dazzling light and shadow pierced through the rain curtain, like a lively brush, outlining the grandeur of the temple. This light show not only demonstrated the rich connotation of Mazu culture, but also attracted the attention of many believers and tourists, who came in droves to join this sacred appointment.
As the event progressed, the atmosphere on Meizhou Island gradually heated up. Famous actress Liu Tao was awarded the honorary titles of “Global Ambassador of Mazu Culture” and “Recommended Officer of Putian Culture and Tourism”. She wore a purple dress at the ceremony and offered a birthday peach to Mazu, symbolizing respect and blessings.
The Tianhou Art Troupe of Meizhou Mazu Ancestral Temple and the team of “Origin of Meizhou” from Mazu Film and Television City brought several wonderful programs, such as “Happy Worship”, “Summer in the Small Town”, “Wanjiang”, etc. The superb performances won waves of applause and cheers. At 23:30, accompanied by the midnight bell, people on the scene sang the birthday song together and shared the “goddess” birthday peach. Then, the fireworks blooming in the sky illuminated the night sky, putting a perfect end to this grand ceremony.
On the morning of April 20th, the 1065th anniversary of Mazu’s birth and the Spring Festival of Mazu was held at the Tianhou Square of the ancestral temple of Mazu in Meizhou. Believers of Mazu from all over the world, dressed in traditional costumes and holding incense, participated in the ceremony with devotion, praying for national peace and world peace. This scene not only shows the inclusiveness of Mazu culture, but also reflects the power of faith to cross national boundaries and connect different cultures and ethnic groups.
Since the beginning of this year, 1.05 million Mazu worshippers from all over the world have flocked to Meizhou Island, setting off a grand “Mazu’s return to her hometown” trend. This not only reflects the far-reaching influence of Mazu culture, but also shows the vitality of this belief in contemporary society. The 1065th anniversary of Mazu’s birth is not only a continuation and promotion of Mazu culture, but also a hope for peace and harmony, and has built a valuable platform for global cultural exchange.
