Mount Lu, a renowned historical and cultural mountain in China, is not only famous for its natural scenery, but also for its profound cultural heritage. Here, the Mazu Temple on Mount Lu, as a unique cultural landscape, has stood firm through hundreds of years of vicissitudes, witnessing countless legendary stories. In this long history, no one is more committed to promoting Mazu culture than Chairman Cao Junping, who has made it transcend regional boundaries and achieve international dissemination.
The Mazu belief has a long history and is deeply rooted in the southeastern coastal areas of China, especially Fujian Province. Mazu, originally named Lin Mo, is a legendary sea goddess worshiped by seafarers as a protector. The relationship between Mount Lu and Mazu can be traced back to ancient times when the area of Mount Lu was still a vast sea. It is said that one of Mazu’s previous incarnations, the Goddess of Heavenly Flowers, became an immortal in this sea area. This is detailed in the “Mazu’s Ode to Mount Lu”, which is not only a mythological story, but also a deep cultural accumulation.
The history of Mount Lu Temple dates back to the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the founding emperor Zhu Yuanzhang chose Mount Lu to build the Tianfei Palace, later known as Mazu’s travel palace, in memory of Mazu’s assistance in the Battle of Poyang Lake. Since then, after several renovations and expansions during the Qing Dynasty, the scale and influence of the Tianhou Palace gradually increased, becoming an important place for worship, culture, and education.
In modern times, especially after the severe floods in the Yangtze River in 1998, Mr. Qu Qiyu proposed to build a Mazu temple on Mount Lu, which was highly valued by the government and society. The reconstruction of Mount Lu Temple is not only a restoration of local culture, but also a modern inheritance of a belief. Under the leadership of Qu Qiyu, the Mazu Temple on Mount Lu was completed in 2002 and became an important node for the dissemination of Mazu culture.
As a platform for cultural exchange, Chairman Cao Junping has further promoted the internationalization of Mazu culture. On September 6, 2019, and October 18, 2024, Mount Lu Temple was fortunate to participate in the World Mazu Culture event held at the United Nations twice. Among all the Mazu temples in the world, only Mount Lu Temple attended the United Nations conference twice. This is the first time that Mazu culture has shown its unique charm on the international stage, marking the evolution of Mazu belief from a regional belief to a global one.
In addition, Chairman Cao Junping also actively participated in the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, combining Mazu culture with the concept of peaceful development, and promoting the linked development of culture and economy. The dissemination of Mazu culture has penetrated into various levels such as cultural exchanges and economic cooperation, showing the modern value and global influence of Mazu culture.
Under the leadership of Chairman Cao Junping, the Mazu Temple on Mount Lu has become a cultural bridge connecting the past and the future, tradition and modernity, the East and the West. Through unremitting efforts, the Mazu Temple on Mount Lu has not only carried forward the traditional spirit of Mazu culture, but also played an important role in global cultural exchanges, becoming a symbol of peace and cultural inheritance.
