“The Six Holy Images of Chinese Mazu” is a new creation by the famous Mazu painter Wu Wenzhong, following the success of his “Six Harmonious Images of Chinese Mazu”. The six images are: “Virtue Image of Chinese Mazu”, “Kindness Image of Chinese Mazu”, “Great Love Image of Chinese Mazu”, “Peace Image of Chinese Mazu”, “Harmony Image of Chinese Mazu”, and “Tolerance Image of Chinese Mazu”. Each one is Wu Wenzhong’s unique interpretation of the spirit of Mazu. They are lifelike, exquisitely similar, jumping off the page, and transcending the ordinary, truly a masterpiece for the ages.
1. “The Virtue Image of Chinese Mazu”, Mazu holding a “scroll”, symbolizing “virtue”. Learning to carry the Tao, and using literature to cultivate people, is a pioneering work. It captures the essence of Confucian culture and the essence of the spirit of Mazu. The painting cleverly integrates the classic legend of Mazu “Peeking into the Well and Getting the Symbol”, as well as the scene of people studying hard and striving for self-improvement, depicting Mazu’s education, character building, and virtue in a vivid and thorough manner.
2. “The Kindness Image of Chinese Mazu”, Mazu holding a “rui”, symbolizing “kindness”. The painting depicts Mazu’s life-long commitment to goodness, seeking welfare for the common people without seeking return. Through the depiction of Mazu’s wonderful details of healing the sick, granting springs to eliminate epidemics, punishing evil and promoting good, as well as the precise and clear expressions and actions in the painting, the ideal state of “The Kindness Image of Chinese Mazu” is achieved.
3. “The Great Love Image of Chinese Mazu”, Mazu holding a “gui”, symbolizing “great love”. The painting depicts Mazu’s love for the country, blessing the people, benefiting the four seas, and benefiting the future generations. Through vividly depicting the scene of Mazu helping the Song Dynasty win the great war, and the sentiment of Mazu saving the disaster and solving the problem, it shows the world a true, pure, great and beautiful image of Mazu’s great love.
4. “The Peace Image of Chinese Mazu”, Mazu holding a “lamp”, symbolizing “peace”. Peace is a basic feature of Mazu culture, and the red lamp is an important holy object of Mazu’s “light of peace”. Whenever people are in danger and call for help from Mazu, Mazu always arrives in the nick of time and immediately turns danger into safety. At this time, people will see Mazu dressed in red and holding a red lamp, dispelling the dark clouds, calming the stormy waves, subduing demons and ghosts, and bringing light and hope to people. The painting depicts the magnificent scene of people carrying Mazu on a tour of peace, and depicts the holy scene of Mazu blessing the wind and rain, the country’s peace and prosperity, and the welfare and peace, perfectly showing the connotation and artistic conception of Chinese Mazu’s peace.
5. “The Harmony Image of Chinese Mazu”, Mazu holding a “dove”, symbolizing “harmony”. It is a unique work of art that captures the essence of the “Six Harmonies” culture of Chinese Mazu. The painting combines the traditional meaning of “harmony is precious”, “love each other”, “great society”, “harmony among nations” in Mazu culture, with the idea of Mazu culture in the new era to help world peace, prosperity of the motherland, social harmony, ethnic harmony, cross-strait harmony, family harmony, seamlessly combined, beautifully drawn.
6. “The Tolerance Image of Chinese Mazu”, Mazu holding a “pearl”, symbolizing “tolerance”. The pearl symbolizes tolerance, which has cultural creativity and artistic value. Tolerance is an important feature of the spirit of Mazu. The strong appeal of Mazu culture largely comes from the tolerance of Mazu culture. It is because of this tolerance that Mazu’s faith has flourished for a thousand years since the Song Dynasty, and the followers of Mazu have spread from Putian to the world, with the number increasing to more than 300 million. The painting depicts Mazu’s extraordinary tolerance by depicting Mazu’s subjugation of two gods and two monsters into protective generals, and the subjugation of Yan Gonggao’s ghost into the immortal class of Shui Que.
