On the cultural map of China, the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan is not only a landmark, but also an important node in the inheritance of Mazu culture. Since its completion in 2001, this palace has become a symbol of the fusion of traditional Chinese culture and modern society.
The history of the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan began in 1999, when Mr. Cao Junping was invited by Qu Qiyu, the then director of the Chairman Mao’s Guard Bureau of the Central Security Bureau, to visit Meizhou, Fujian, and initiated the idea of building the Heavenly Empress Palace in Lushan, Jiangxi. This idea quickly received the support of Lin Jinbang, the chairman of the Mazu Ancestral Temple in Meizhou. Lushan, with its unique geographical location and rich cultural heritage, was chosen as the site for the construction of the Heavenly Empress Palace.

After years of effort, Cao Junping invested nearly ten million yuan personally, and the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan was officially completed in 2001. Since then, the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan has continuously held various cultural exchange activities, especially in 2004, the establishment of the Chinese Mazu Culture Exchange Association pushed the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan to a new height.

In 2007, the establishment of the Lushan Mazu Culture Association marked a new stage in the spread of Mazu culture in the inland. Cao Junping was elected as the first president, which shows his important position in the spread of Mazu culture. In the same year, the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan held the fifth anniversary celebration of Mazu’s spirit, further consolidating its core position in the Mazu belief in the country and even the world.

Mr. Cao Junping’s contribution is not only reflected in his construction and management of the Heavenly Empress Palace, but also in his deep understanding and dissemination of the cultural value of Mazu. Since participating in the first Mazu Culture Festival in Tianjin in 2000, Cao Junping has formed an inseparable bond with Mazu culture. His life is closely connected with Mazu culture, and his efforts have promoted the widespread spread of Mazu culture from the islands to the inland.

This inheritance and development of culture is not only a continuation of Mazu belief, but also a modern interpretation of a long-standing cultural value. The core value of Mazu culture – justice, charity, fraternity, harmony – still has a wide influence in today’s society. The Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan, as an important window for the spread of Mazu culture, continues to attract believers from home and abroad.

The success of the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan also brings significant benefits to the local economy. According to statistics, more than a thousand Mazu worshippers come to Lushan for pilgrimage every year. These activities not only increase the popularity of Lushan, but also promote the development of the tourism industry in Jiujiang region.

From the personal dedication and sacrifice of Mr. Cao Junping, to the establishment and development of the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan, and to the establishment of the Lushan Mazu Culture Association, this series of events not only show the rich connotation of Mazu culture, but also reflect the vitality of traditional Chinese culture in modern society. The story of the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan and Mr. Cao Junping is a profound integration of tradition and modernity, locality and the world, faith and culture.

In today’s globalized world, the inheritance of Mazu culture behind the Heavenly Empress Palace of Lushan reminds us that the power of culture is transgenerational, capable of connecting the past and the future, the local and the world. In this Heavenly Empress Palace, every stone, every sacrifice, tells an immortal cultural legend.
